Rocky Mountain Valais started with a simple pull toward a breed that felt out of place anywhere but the mountains — and a piece of ground in Southeast Idaho that turned out to suit it perfectly.
The Valais Blacknose — Walliser Schwarznasenschaf, in its native Switzerland — has been bred in the canton of Valais for centuries, selected for a calm temperament, sound feet, and heavy wool suited to long alpine winters. When the breed arrived in North America, it stayed rare: registered numbers are still small, and good bloodlines are worth tracking carefully.
We were drawn to that combination of history and hardiness. Our own ground in Franklin County sits at elevation, with cold winters and open pasture — conditions the breed was built for, just a different mountain range.
Everything about how we run this flock is built around keeping bloodlines honest and animals well cared for — not around scaling up.
Every breeding animal is documented, so lineage is never a guess — for us or for the next owner.
Our flock is raised outdoors on grass and hay through Idaho's full seasonal swing, the way the breed was developed to live.
We'd rather place a lamb with the right buyer than the first one — and we're glad to talk through what ownership actually involves.
We're located near Preston, Idaho, in the Cache Valley area of Southeast Idaho. Farm visits are welcome by appointment — it's the best way to see the flock, ask questions in person, and get a feel for a bloodline before you commit to it.
